Electronics giant Samsung has unveiled new plans to shift to their own operating system for the latest and updated version of their smartwatch. This decision has taken the world over with a storm and has given the electronics giant an opportunity to step up to its own resource of self-made software and other associated services. The new version will run on Tizen in place of Google’s Android based operating system.
The Google based android operating system has revolutionized the electronics industry. Samsung itself had reaped huge benefits from this popularity and has established itself as a global leader in the area of smartphones and other associated technologies. However, the company has always felt the need to develop and popularize their own operating system to reduce this dependency on a third party operating system and to stabilize their own all around capability. They will launch the new updated Gear 2 smartwatch which would run on a new HTML 5 version of the Tizen operating system at an event in Barcelona later this month.
This operating system is being marketed vigorously by Samsung in an effort to possess in house open source software for all smartphone and other associated platforms. The project initially faced a few setbacks but seems to be on track recently and the company is banking a lot on this venture. The first version of the Gear smartwatch ran on Android, the Google mobile operating system and became immensely popular in the market. The latest move in switching over from android to Tizen hints strongly towards the fact that the company is highly optimistic towards the success of the new software.
One critical issue is regarding the latest version of the Android for wearable devices which is being suspected to be less open than the earlier versions. On this issue, maybe the electronics giant is trying to avoid any future tassels with Google regarding the balance of power. The smartphone and tablet manufacturers typically manufacture the hardware and rely on Android to take over the software part. The immense popularity of this open source has prevented the manufacturers from developing their own software as they are not too sure about the reception and popularity.
Samsung is trying hard to avoid this situation in the wearable technology segment and is aiming to generate more revenue and capture market share through in-house software services.
The use of the latest version of HTML5 means that the company is targeting the web developers in an attempt to develop new applications for their upcoming devices. One disadvantage in this aspect is that the HTML5 versions do not perform as smooth as android devices. However, there is a high probability that this attempt could bear fruit and establish the company further.
Thus, this new move has rocked the electronics industry and all eyes would stay focused towards the outcome of this new venture. Experts are keeping their fingers crossed and are optimistic of a good performance from the new operating system that could help this electronics giant gain a stronghold towards the entire circle in smartphone, tablets and other associated gadgets related technologies.
