404 errors are the most common errors that one can see while surfing webpages. Mostly people think that “404 – Page not found error” on Internet is same as “server not found error” but actually both are different. These both errors are generated due to different problems.
What are 404 errors?
404 errors Shows up on a webpage when someone clicks or follows a dead or broken link. This webpage is created by the web hosting server on which the user may be surfing and that website is located but “server not found error” is simply due to the problem in device or network connection.
How to make a custom 404 error page?
Creating a custom 404 page will ensure that people are not confused while they see an error like this and WordPress has made it a lot easier for us to these problems. To make custom 404 error page in wordpress, you can either create custom page with some coding or you can install a plugin from WordPress plugin directory which will make the process a lot easier.
There is a possibility that your theme must be having a template for 404 errors and WordPress will look for it all by itself when some clicks a dead link. But if you don’t know if your theme has the 404 template then type anything in the search bar after typing your domain address and look for page not found error.
For example – Type anything after address of your website http://www.yourdomain.com/edsndnsns and if a page with 404 error shows up then your theme has the template.
If 404 template is not installed, Follow steps below –
1. Create a file with notepad called 404.php.
2. Copy the content below and Paste it in 404.php

<h2>Error 404 – Page Not Found.</h2>
<?php get_sidebar(); ?>
<?php get_footer(); ?>
This will show a message to the user of “Error 404 – Page Not Found” and the header, footer and sidebar of your website.
3. Save the File and then upload this in root directory of your WordPress website inside public_html.
If the above process looks complicated or doesn’t work then you can make custom 404 error page with a single click. Install a plugin that will automatically create a page for 404 error and you will have a power to customize your page with fonts, links and Images.

1. Go to your WordPress dashboard.
2. Select “Add New Plugin” from left menu and on next page click “Upload” from top.
3. Browse the plugin from your computer and install it.
4. Customize the page from the custom 404 page menu.
