Amazon’s recent announcement about delivery drones in India
Amazon, one of the leading names in the global market of online retailing, has recently announced that the company is planning to make India the launch- pad for its soon- to- be- released drones, for the delivery of packages. These drones are unmanned aerial vehicles, and the news has been confirmed by the two people of the company who are aware of the development, who have made the announcement on the condition of anonymity. This online store, which is based in the US, has its Indian warehouses in Mumbai and Bangalore, and it has been declared that the drone delivery services will be released on a trial in these two cities.
Why India and not the US
The question that comes to mind is, in spite of Amazon being a based in the US, why its first drones are being released in India, when the United States should have been the first choice. But, the reason that the US is not the launch- pad of these cutting- edge delivery services is that, the use of commercial drone is currently illegal in the United States. As per the dictation of the FAA or Federal Aviation Administration, only the hobbyists are allowed to fly drones outdoors in the US, and the commercial experimentations have to remain constricted to the indoors. It was expected of the FAA to lift this ban in September, 2015, but, it has been confirmed that the deadline has been delayed due to regulatory and technical obstacles. Therefore, the company has taken the decision to start the trial in India, in order to avoid the domestic regulatory constraints, since India has no such law about drone usage.
How the drone delivery system is likely to help
The services are likely to bring greater publicity to Amazon in India, where a number of other online relaters are operating with great success. In fact, Flipkart is one of the main contenders in this regard. It already has Prime Air, which is an octocopter fitted with eight rotors. It has most recently been confirmed that the company is developing vehicles which have a weight less than 25 kg, and will be able to travel at a speed of more than 80km/hr. These drones will be able to carry a payload of as much as 2.26 kg, thus covering 86 percent of the total products sold by the company. It can be expected that the best-selling products, such as books and mobiles, will be delivered within a time frame of 90 minutes to 3 hours for select customers. It is expected that since the concept of drones is new in the Indian market, the will have not probably developed any kind of bias against it. It is likely that this new service will not only be helpful to the customers but also for the company, as these new and advanced services will help to give the company an opportunity to compete with the services of Flipkart and other online retailers. It is expected that the delivery of products by the drone will play a huge part in the publicity of the company.
